Letter to My Members of Congress

It is passed time to stop escalating the war in Ukraine and bring it to a stop. The only thing this war is achieving is the deaths of hundreds of thousands of lives, most of whom are innocent, and the destruction of an entire nation.

In 2014, the people of the Donbass (and Crimea), for reasons of their own, declared their independence from Ukraine much the same as American settlers declared their independence from Britain in 1776. From 2014 to the present, the conflict between the Kiev government and the rebel territories has progressively escalated now includes the military support of Russian, US, and half of the NATO countries in a war that is killing Ukrainians and destroying their country. Continued escalation of this war can only increase the risk of a nuclear confrontation and even a third world war.

In addition to the human tragedy, consider the economic costs and the environmental costs of the war. Nothing is gained by this war except for the profits of the weapons makers and, perhaps for a few, the thrill of being king of the mountain (whatever that’s worth). Explain to me, how are we benefiting from the hundreds of billions we are investing in this war? What are you getting from it? What am I getting from it? I and other taxpayers are paying for it, but I don’t see any benefit. Instead, I see only increased debt that my children and future generations will have to pay.

Americans like to brag about their support for human rights everywhere, but in supporting the war in Ukraine we are doing the opposite. Instead, we are providing both the weapons and the moral support for the murder of those who declared a wish to be independent of what they believed to be an oppressive government.

It’s time to stop this madness. Stop delivering weapons to Ukraine. Stop NATO’s support of the war. Stop encouraging Zelensky’s pursuit of this war and demand a UN conducted plebiscite of the people in the Donbass territories to determine how and by whom they wish to be governed. And then fully support their decision. And afterwards, we Americans have a moral obligation to help all sides recover from the destruction for which we are partially responsible.
