Making America great. What does that mean? Great for what? Great for whom? And what does it mean to be great? Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, defines “great” as follows: signifies something notably large in size, numerous, or remarkable in magniture, degree, or effectiveness, and can also be used as a generalized term of approval meaning excellent or very good. That doesn’t seem to help very much.
So what does Trump mean when he says, “Make America Great”? Does he mean that America will be rich. But by comparison with other nations, America is already rich. Does he mean that America will be powerful? But by comparison with other nations, America is already powerful. And who is America? Is America every U.S. citizen? Will we all be healthy, wealthy and secure?
I don’t think that’s what he means. I‘m willing to guess that Trump’s vision of greatness is huge corporations with huge factories belching out black smoke, producing autos, computers, appliances and best of all, weapons. This vision, would also include a raging bull stock market, huge banks bursting with money, and a massive military fully equipped and ready to defeat any threat in the galaxy. And he would be lord over it all as President for Life. What is missing from this vision is, of course, any concern for the welfare of anyone else.
The reality, though, is that no one, including Trump, really knows what he means by making America great; but millions of Americans are willing to follow him blindly in the hope that he will be their savior.
Unfortunately, what Trump lacks in morals, he also lacks in vision. He is truly the Pied Piper of Hamelin or the Jim Jones of the 21st century.
