Letter to my Congressmen

What bothers me is that instead of promoting peace in Ukraine, our government is steadfastly promoting war, spewing propaganda about evil Russians and shipping arms of increasing lethality and at an ever increasing rate that can only result in greater destruction and loss of human life. Why are we not attempting to broker peace? Other than our arms industry, who benefits from this policy? Certainly not the average citizen (or their children and grandchildren) who will have to pay for these weapons with their taxes and increased inflation caused by war. Even worse we appear to be pursuing a strategy that risks escalating into a nuclear war with Russia.

It doesn’t matter who started the war, we should be promoting peace. We tell the world we want peace, but instead, we are fanning the flames of war. Why are we doing this?

It bothers me that 10’s of thousands of innocent people have been needlessly killed with the weapons we have sent to Ukraine and that 10’s if not 100’s of thousands more will be killed if it is not stopped. It bothers me that we are involved in a war that is none of our business while ignoring the much greater threat that can only be exacerbated by war. Have you given no thought to the environmental consequences of war along with the human costs? War can only increase global warming which will ultimately destroy huge amounts of land, forcing mass migration, huge relocation costs and possibly conflict on a scale heretofore unknown. Like Nero, we appear to be fiddling while the earth burns.

What bothers me most of all is that what bothers me doesn’t appear to bother you. You seem perfectly comfortable spending money that will have to be paid back by future generations to purchase and ship weapons to prolong the war in Ukraine – weapons that will not only kill people and destroy property, but will do great harm to the environment. Why?

Have you no sense of decency?
