Insurrectionists in Congress

We all know what happened on January 6 last year, but right now there is something we can all do about it. On January 3, right after the new year, the next Congress will be sworn in. Included in that group are 121 member of Congress who voted to reject the results of our election in order to install their own candidate as president, and who were reelected in the November 8 election last month.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States clearly forbids anyone from holding public office who, having previously taken the oath of public office, then engages in any activity that attempts to overthrow our government. Those members of Congress who participated in the attempted January 6 coup should not be allowed to be sworn into office for another term. Unless members of Congress who didn’t participate in the attempted coup take action to prevent it, those who did will likely be sworn in to office – in violation of the Constitution. Accordingly, I am urging my members of Congress who did not participate in the attempted coup to disallow those 121 reelected members who did from ever taking the oath of office again.

In addition, I urge everyone to write to their members of Congress who did not participate in the January 6 attempted coup to refuse to seat those who did. Please feel free to copy my letter below and/or edit it as you wish, or write your own. Whatever you do, please write as soon as possible. The deadline for doing so is probably December 31 as the new Congress will be sworn in on January 3.

==============================================================

On January 6, 2021, 147 members of Congress voted to reject the results of elections that were held in total compliance with the Constitution and federal and state laws in order to install their own defeated candidate as president. This action constitutes an attempted coup to take over our government. Of these 147 members of Congress, 121 were reelected to office on November 8.

Section 3 of the 14th amendment to the Constitution states, “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability”.

Accordingly, the 121 members of Congress who participated in the attempted coup should be barred from holding any public office. As it is your sworn duty to uphold the constitution, you must ensure that those conspirators are denied seats in Congress.
